Cable Crunch
Abs are muscles, and muscles grow from progressive load — which is exactly what the cable crunch provides. Kneeling below a high pulley with a rope behind your head, you curl the spine against a resistance you can increase week after week, something floor crunches can never offer. For building visible rectus abdominis thickness, this is the closest thing ab training has to a bench press.

How to do the cable crunch, step by step
- Attach a rope to a high pulley and kneel down facing the stack, a couple of feet back.
- Hold the rope ends beside your head or against your collarbones and let the cable stretch you tall.
- Keep your hips fixed in place — they do not move during the rep.
- Crunch by curling your spine, driving your elbows toward your thighs and your ribs toward your pelvis.
- Squeeze the abs hard at the bottom for a second, exhaling fully.
- Return under control until the abs reach a full stretch, and repeat.
Form cues that fix most reps
Curl your spine like rolling up a rug — this is ribs to hips, not a bow at the waist.
Lock the hips in space; if your backside drifts backward, the hip flexors are stealing the rep.
Blow all your air out at the bottom to find the last few degrees of contraction.

Cable Crunch sets and reps
Match the rep range to your goal, not the other way around. These are the standard evidence-based ranges:
| Goal | Sets × Reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 3–5 × 3–6 | 2–3 min |
| Muscle growth | 3–4 × 8–12 | 60–90 sec |
| Endurance | 2–3 × 15–20 | 30–60 sec |

Cable Crunch FAQ
What muscles does the cable crunch work?
The rectus abdominis — the six-pack muscle — through its true function of flexing the spine, with the obliques assisting. Because the cable loads the movement, it builds thickness in the abs the way weights build any other muscle.
How many sets and reps for cable crunches?
Treat abs like a normal muscle: 3 sets of 10 to 15 with a weight that genuinely challenges you, 2 to 3 times a week, adding load over time. Hundreds of light reps mostly build endurance, not visible abs.
Will cable crunches give me a six-pack?
They build the muscle; whether it shows depends on body-fat level, which is a nutrition outcome. Train them for thickness now and the abs will be there when leanness reveals them — visible abs are made of both pieces.
