Hip Abduction Machine

Also known as: hip abductor machine, abduction machine, outer thigh machine

GlutesMachine

Pressing the knees apart against pads seems minor next to squats and thrusts, but the hip abduction machine trains what they miss: the gluteus medius and upper glute max, the muscles that build width at the top of the hips and keep the pelvis stable on one leg. Strong abductors mean steadier knees in squats and lunges, and the machine loads them more directly than any band drill.

How to do the hip abduction machine, step by step

  1. Sit in the machine with your back against the pad and the outside of your knees against the pads.
  2. Select a weight you can move without lurching and grip the handles.
  3. Press the knees apart in a controlled 1 to 2 seconds, going as wide as your hips allow.
  4. Hold the fully open position for a one-second squeeze.
  5. Resist the pads on the way back in over 2 to 3 seconds.
  6. Stop just before the stack touches down and press out again.

Form cues that fix most reps

Lean the torso slightly forward off the pad to shift more work into the upper glutes.

Push through the outside of the knees, not by rocking the whole body.

The slow return is half the exercise — never let the pads snap your legs back together.

Common mistakes (and the fix)

Loading the full stack and heaving with momentum
Choose a weight that allows a pause at full width.
Tiny pulses in the middle of the range
Open as wide as possible on every rep.
Treating it as a session's main glute work
It is an accessory; put your heavy thrusts and squats first.

Hip Abduction Machine FAQ

What muscles does the hip abduction machine work?

The gluteus medius and minimus on the side of the hip, plus the upper fibers of the gluteus maximus — the muscles that move the leg away from the midline. These give the glutes their upper roundness and stabilize the pelvis when you stand on one leg.

Is the abduction machine actually useful or just a filler exercise?

Used with full range, real effort, and controlled negatives, it is one of the few ways to load abduction progressively — something bands do poorly past a light level. It will not replace compound lifts, but 2 to 3 hard sets of 12 to 20 reps adds meaningful upper-glute volume.

Seated upright or leaning forward?

Both are valid. Sitting upright biases the gluteus medius from a neutral hip angle, while leaning the torso forward shifts emphasis toward the upper gluteus maximus. Alternating between them across sets or sessions covers the region fully.
