Preacher Curl

BicepsMachine

Cheating is impossible on a preacher curl, which is exactly why it works. With the backs of your upper arms fixed against an angled pad, the shoulders and torso can't help, and the biceps alone control the weight — especially through the stretched bottom position where the pad holds your arms out in front of you. It is the strictest curl in the gym and a reliable fix for lifters whose standing curls have become a swing.

How to do the preacher curl, step by step

  1. Set the seat so your armpits sit snugly over the top edge of the pad and your upper arms lie flat against it.
  2. Grip the handles or bar with palms up, arms extended down the pad.
  3. Keep your chest against the pad and your feet planted.
  4. Curl the weight up until your forearms are just short of vertical, keeping the upper arms glued to the pad.
  5. Squeeze the biceps at the top for a beat.
  6. Lower for three seconds until your arms are almost fully straight, stopping just short of a hard lockout at the bottom.

Form cues that fix most reps

The stretched bottom position is where preacher curls earn their reputation — lower slowly and own it.

Stop a few degrees short of complete elbow lockout at the bottom; the pad puts the biceps under real load there.

Keep your armpits tight to the pad; if your elbows lift off, the weight is too heavy.

Common mistakes (and the fix)

Letting the elbows float off the pad at the top
That turns it back into a standing curl; keep the upper arms pressed down throughout.
Dropping into the bottom and bouncing off the stretch
The fast rebound is both wasted stimulus and the main way people irritate the biceps tendon here.
Half-repping the top only
The lower half of the preacher curl's range is the valuable half.

Preacher Curl FAQ

What muscles does the preacher curl work?

The biceps brachii and the brachialis beneath it, with the pad eliminating help from the shoulders and back. The arms-forward position slackens the long head slightly, so the short head and brachialis take a somewhat larger share than in a standing curl.

How many sets and reps should I do?

Three sets of 8–12 controlled reps is the standard. Because the bottom position loads the biceps in a deep stretch, build weight up gradually and never sacrifice the slow negative to move a bigger pin setting.

Is the preacher curl safe for my elbows?

Yes, when you control the descent. Trouble comes almost entirely from bouncing out of the stretched bottom position under heavy load. Lower on a three-count, stop just short of full lockout, and the movement is one of the more joint-friendly curls available.
