Standing Calf Raise
Also known as: machine calf raise, standing calf raises
Calf size is decided mostly by the gastrocnemius, and the standing calf raise trains it in the only position where it works fully — with straight knees. Under the machine's shoulder pads, you rise onto the balls of your feet and sink into a deep heel stretch, loading the calves through their complete range. It is the foundational calf exercise; everything else is a variation on this theme.
How to do the standing calf raise, step by step
- Step under the shoulder pads with the balls of your feet on the platform edge, heels hanging free.
- Stand tall with knees straight but not locked hard, and release the safety.
- Lower your heels below the platform over 2 to 3 seconds until you feel a deep stretch.
- Pause in the stretched bottom for a full second — no bouncing.
- Drive up onto the balls of your feet as high as possible.
- Squeeze at the top for a second, then lower under control and repeat.
Form cues that fix most reps
Pause at the bottom — the bounce you are skipping is your Achilles tendon doing the work instead of your calves.
Rise all the way up, like standing on tiptoe to reach a top shelf.
Full range at a controlled tempo beats heavy quarter reps every time.

Standing Calf Raise sets and reps
Match the rep range to your goal, not the other way around. These are the standard evidence-based ranges:
| Goal | Sets × Reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 3–5 × 3–6 | 2–3 min |
| Muscle growth | 3–4 × 8–12 | 60–90 sec |
| Endurance | 2–3 × 15–20 | 30–60 sec |

Standing Calf Raise FAQ
What muscles does the standing calf raise work?
Primarily the gastrocnemius — the visible, two-headed muscle of the calf — which only works at full capacity when the knee is straight. The deeper soleus assists, but standing work is fundamentally gastrocnemius work.
How many sets and reps for calves?
Calves respond to volume and full range: 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 15 reps, 2 to 3 times a week, with a pause at the bottom stretch. Consistency over months matters more here than any single-session trick.
Why do my calves not grow?
Almost always some mix of bounced partial reps, too little weekly volume, and giving up early — calves are stubborn and often need months of consistent full-range work. Slow the negative, pause in the stretch, add a set each week up to a reasonable ceiling, and track the load like any other lift.
