Incline Push-Up
Put your hands on a bench, a countertop, or a sturdy rail, and the push-up becomes accessible to almost anyone. The incline push-up reduces the load on the chest, triceps, and core just enough to allow full-range, quality reps, which makes it the standard bridge to floor push-ups. Lower the surface an inch at a time and the same movement carries a beginner all the way there.
How to do the incline push-up, step by step
- Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder width on a bench, box, or bar at hip-to-knee height.
- Walk your feet back until your body forms a straight line from head to heels.
- Squeeze the glutes and brace the abs so the hips cannot sag.
- Lower your chest to the edge of the surface over two seconds, elbows tucking to about 45 degrees.
- Touch the chest lightly, then press away until your arms are straight.
- Hold the plank for a beat at the top before the next rep.
Form cues that fix most reps
Treat it as a moving plank — the body travels as one rigid piece from ears to ankles.
The lower the surface, the harder the rep; progress by dropping the height, not by rushing reps.
Push the surface away and slightly down through your palms, like closing a heavy drawer.

Incline Push-Up sets and reps
Match the rep range to your goal, not the other way around. These are the standard evidence-based ranges:
| Goal | Sets × Reps | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 3–5 × 3–6 | 2–3 min |
| Muscle growth | 3–4 × 8–12 | 60–90 sec |
| Endurance | 2–3 × 15–20 | 30–60 sec |

Incline Push-Up FAQ
What muscles does the incline push-up work?
It trains the chest, triceps, and front delts, with the core holding the plank throughout. Despite the name, the incline hand position slightly biases the lower chest — the "incline" refers to your body angle, not the bench-press kind of incline.
How many should I do, and how do I progress?
Do 3–4 sets stopping a rep or two short of failure. Once you reach about 15 clean reps per set, lower the surface — bench to step to floor — and the rep count will reset. That height ladder is the whole progression.
Are incline push-ups just easier push-ups?
Essentially yes, and that is their value. The elevation reduces the percentage of bodyweight you press, letting you train the identical pattern with full range and honest form. They also remain useful for advanced lifters as a high-rep burnout after heavy pressing.
