Leg Extension

QuadsMachine

No other exercise isolates the quads like the leg extension. Sitting in the machine removes the hips from the equation entirely, so the quadriceps — including the rectus femoris, which squats undertrain — do every bit of the work. Use it to add quad volume after heavy compound lifts, to bring up a lagging teardrop, or to train the knee joint when squatting is off the table.

How to do the leg extension, step by step

  1. Adjust the seat so your knees line up with the machine's pivot point and the pad sits on your lower shins.
  2. Set the back pad so your thighs are fully supported and grip the handles.
  3. Extend your knees until the legs are completely straight, taking about one second.
  4. Squeeze the quads hard at the top for a full second.
  5. Lower under control for 2 to 3 seconds through the biggest range the machine allows.
  6. Stop just before the stack touches down and begin the next rep.

Form cues that fix most reps

Full lockout, full squeeze — the top of this movement is where the quads work hardest.

Point your toes up and keep them there; sloppy ankles usually mean sloppy reps.

Hold the handles and pin your hips down so the machine moves, not you.

Common mistakes (and the fix)

Swinging the stack up with momentum
Slow the lift and add a one-second hold at the top.
Stopping short of full knee extension
The last 20 degrees is the point of the exercise, so lighten the load until you can finish it.
Hips lifting off the seat on every rep
Tighten the seat position and brace down into the pad.

Leg Extension sets and reps

Match the rep range to your goal, not the other way around. These are the standard evidence-based ranges:

Leg Extension FAQ

What muscles does the leg extension work?

Just the quadriceps — all four heads, including the rectus femoris, which crosses the hip and gets relatively little stimulus from squats and presses. That makes extensions a genuinely useful complement to compound leg work rather than a redundant one.

How many sets and reps for leg extensions?

It shines in moderate to high ranges: 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps with a deliberate squeeze at the top. Because the loading is kind and the setup is instant, it is also a good place for occasional drop sets or sets pushed to failure.

Are leg extensions bad for your knees?

Research does not support the old claim that they are inherently dangerous for healthy knees; controlled knee extension under load is also a staple of rehab. Use smooth reps, a sensible weight, and full range. If you have an existing knee condition, work within pain-free range and progress gradually.
