Leg Press

Also known as: 45 degree leg press, machine leg press, sled press

When the goal is pushing the quads hard without balancing a barbell, the leg press delivers. The machine locks your torso in place so all the effort goes into leg drive, letting you train the quads and glutes close to failure with far less skill and lower-back demand than a squat. It works as a heavy main lift or as high-rep volume after squatting.

How to do the leg press, step by step

  1. Sit back in the machine with your lower back and hips flat against the pad.
  2. Place your feet on the platform about shoulder-width apart, mid-platform for balanced quad and glute work.
  3. Unrack the sled and grip the handles at your sides.
  4. Lower the platform under control for 2 to 3 seconds until the knees reach roughly 90 degrees or as deep as you can go without the lower back rounding off the pad.
  5. Press through the whole foot to drive the sled back up.
  6. Stop just short of locking the knees out hard, then begin the next rep.

Form cues that fix most reps

Keep your hips glued to the pad — the rep ends where your lower back starts to curl.

Push through midfoot and heel, not the toes.

Control the descent; the stretch under load is where the growth stimulus lives.

Common mistakes (and the fix)

Cutting range to quarter reps with maximum plates
Halve the load and lower until the knees pass 90 degrees.
Letting the lower back round off the seat at the bottom
Stop the descent just before the hips tuck under.
Slamming into knee lockout with the sled
Finish the rep with a soft knee and constant tension.

Leg Press sets and reps

Match the rep range to your goal, not the other way around. These are the standard evidence-based ranges:

Muscle growth3–4 × 8–1260–90 sec
Endurance2–3 × 15–2030–60 sec

Leg Press FAQ

What muscles does the leg press work?

Primarily the quads, with the glutes and adductors assisting, especially with a higher or wider foot placement. A low, narrow stance shifts emphasis further toward the quads; a high stance brings the glutes and hamstrings in more.

Is the leg press as good as squats?

For quad growth, it is comparable when both are trained hard through a full range. What it does not do is train balance, bracing, or the trunk, so most programs use both: squats as the skill-based strength lift, the leg press to add quad volume without extra lower-back fatigue.

How many sets and reps on the leg press?

It responds well to moderate and high reps: 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 15 taken within a rep or two of failure. Very low reps are possible but the machine's fixed path makes higher reps the safer way to push effort.
