Diamond Push-Up

No equipment builds triceps better than the diamond push-up. Placing your hands together under your chest, thumbs and index fingers forming a diamond, turns an ordinary push-up into an elbow-extension-dominant press that hammers all three triceps heads, with the inner chest and core working underneath. EMG comparisons consistently rank it among the highest triceps activators of any push-up variation, and it travels anywhere you do.

How to do the diamond push-up, step by step

  1. Get into a push-up position and bring your hands together under your chest, index fingers and thumbs touching to form a diamond.
  2. Set your body in a straight line from head to heels, squeezing your glutes and bracing your abs.
  3. Lower your chest toward your hands with the elbows tracking back along your ribs, not flaring wide.
  4. Descend for two seconds until your chest lightly touches your hands.
  5. Press back up to full elbow lockout, keeping the body rigid as one piece.
  6. Pause briefly at the top with the triceps squeezed, then repeat.

Form cues that fix most reps

Keep the elbows brushing your ribs on the way down — that tuck is what keeps the triceps in charge.

If full reps are too hard, elevate your hands on a bench and progress toward the floor over a few weeks.

If the diamond position bothers your wrists, move the hands apart a few inches; anything inside shoulder width keeps the triceps bias.

Common mistakes (and the fix)

Sagging hips halfway through the set
Brace the glutes and abs so the body moves as one plank from first rep to last.
Cutting depth as fatigue builds
Chest touches the hands every rep, or the set is over.
Flaring the elbows out wide
That shifts work to the chest and shoulders and strains the wrists in this hand position.

Diamond Push-Up FAQ

What muscles does the diamond push-up work?

The triceps are the prime mover, with the inner portion of the chest and the front delts assisting the press and the core holding the plank. The narrow hand position is what shifts the emphasis from the chest to the triceps compared with a regular push-up.

How many reps should I do?

Work in 3–4 sets, stopping one or two reps short of failure — for most people that is somewhere between 5 and 20 reps depending on strength. Once you exceed about 20 clean reps, elevate your feet or add a slow three-second descent rather than just adding reps forever.

Are diamond push-ups a good substitute for pushdowns at home?

Yes — they are the closest bodyweight equivalent to gym triceps work, and hard sets near failure produce comparable growth stimulus. Pair them with bench dips or a band pushdown to cover the triceps from more than one angle when training at home.
